Biography
This Boston-born rapper's remarkably cut physique and camera-happy gyrations helped catapult him to stardom in 1991 with the release of his debut album "Music for the People". After literally and figuratively overexposing himself as the Calvin Klein underwear model, Wahlberg, who became famous under the name Marky Mark, tried his hand at acting. 5With his boxer-like looks and rude, cocksure persona, Wahlberg's first dramatic role was as a pumped-up punk in the TV-movie "The Substitute" (USA Network, 1993). He went further in casting off his early self-styled persona playing a bumpkin army recruit in his feature acting debut, Penny Marshall's "Renaissance Man" (1994). He began to earn respectful notices with his supporting role as Leonardo DiCaprio's tough friend in in "The Basketball Diaries" (1995), and delivered a powerful turn as a stalker obsessed with Reese Witherspoon in the thriller "Fear" (1996). Wahlberg next portrayed a would-be con artist who finds a mentor in Bill Paxton in "Traveller" (1997) and won his best reviews to date as a porn star in "Boogie Nights" (also 1997). Wahlberg next tried to fashion himself into an ction hero with "The Big Hit" (1998) and a reaming with Hong Kong star Chow-Yun Fat in "The Corruptor" (1999), but in both cases, he seemed miscast.
