An attractive dark-haired player with playful good looks who has begun to make the transition from child performer to young adult actor, Tobey Maguire may be remembered as the lead in the short-lived sitcom "Great Scott!" (Fox, 1992). As the teenaged protagonist whose fantasies were more lively than his real life, Maguire charmed the critics but failed to impress the viewing audiences. The California native entered show business at the urging of a neighbor, an entertainment manager. In 1987, Maguire began studying acting and began appearing in various TV commercials (e.g., Atari and McDonald's) before landing his first small role in the HBO special "On Location: Rodney Dangerfield 'Opening Night at Rodney's Place'" (1989). Episodic guest appearances on such shows as "Eerie, Indiana", "Roseanne" and "Jake and the Fatman" followed. He has appeared in a few TV-movies, notably as Kate Nelligan's confused teenaged son in "Spoils of War" (ABC, 1994) and as Ann-Margret's stepson in "Seduced by Madness: The Diane Borchardt Story" (NBC, 1996). 5In 1993, Maguire segued to the big screen in a featured role in "This Boy's Life". He had his first screen lead as Mickey Rooney's grandson in the mediocre horror film "The Adventures of the Red Baron" (1994). After a turn in "SFW" (1994), he played a self-conscious youth attending a party with a variety of popular singers in Griffin Dunne's Oscar-nominated short film "The Duke of Groove" (1995). Maguire had his best screen role to date as the confused son of Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver in Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm" (1997). He subsequently landed a role as one of the author's fictional alter egos in Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" (also 1997).
